The Annunciationist follows an American painter consumed by his obsession with depictions of the Annunciation—the moment the Archangel Gabriel tells the Virgin she will bear a child. To him, the mystery lies not only in the divine message but in the forbidden intimacy between messenger and maiden.
Haunted by this paradox, Martin travels through Europe seeking to understand the power of that encounter—and himself. His fascination draws him into the lives of those he meets along the way, each encounter shaping the art he creates and the boundaries he tests.
Set against luminous backdrops from Santorini to Assisi, this novel explores art, desire, and the uneasy meeting point between the sacred and the human.
Kenneth Kuenster has written three novels. He is also a visual artist. His fiction and his visual art influence each other. The subject matter of his novels is art and artists of all kinds. He has spent much time in Europe, where many of the stories in his fiction take place. He has BFA and MFA degrees from Yale.
